Olympic sized

mm 2005
We went to the Olympic stadium on the last Friday of the 2005 World athletics championships. The Venue of Helsinki and the stadium was a last minute venue after London pulled out, and although they lost money they also didn’t do much in the away of upgrading the stadium beforehand. I was reminded about this when I read a piece about it in axis of aevil so I thought I’d post something about it. Most people going there must have noticed the flaking paint round the windows and worn away veneer on the timber cladding. I thought that it was a refreshing change to acknowledge the age of the facility and not bankrupt the country for the sake of the national image (see this article on the greek olympic debacle). The stadium also is really nice and the style for me recalls an earlier less professional sporting age now sadly long gome. After the games there have been some calls to build a new stadium or upgrade this one which seems a bit of an odd choice of where to spend the money if it may not be used properly. See also the original Hesingin Sanomat article.

Zaha Hadid in the press

August 19, 2005

zaha hadid bmw
Zaha Hadid has been in the press this week in a very interesting article both about her and her office. She is up for the 2005 Stirling Prize, and the bets are already going on. Have your say who will win at archiseek. Early betting here and for some further gossip on Hadid (inded any other starchitect too!) go to the gutter.

Finnish Architectural Photography

August 8, 2005

A good place to start if you are unfamiliar with Current Finnish Architecture is Jussi Tiainen’s photography.
He has photographed almost all of the best current architecture around in finland. Some more of his work is posted here.
You can look at his books here.

Prefab living

August 4, 2005

container house

Caterina fake of flickr has a piece on Container housing This is a fantastic use for them as not only do they look cool, but they could have a very relevant use in the 3rd world. See Squattercity and you will see a projection on 3 billion! people living in shanty towns by 2050.

I think you could probably break the issue down into two distinct parts. Prefabracated living unit design where you have the need for shelter and disaster relief (see future shack by Sean Godsell), and maybe the area of greater need where there are squatter areas some of which are well established and shelter is not the top priority, but where clean water is. Could you manufacture inside a container unit a water filter/treatment unit which could service say a shanty block without need for any further infrastructure?

What would it need to do- Filter and rainwater storage system?, store (probably not practical) or partially treat waste before returning it to the local system so as not to pollute any ground water and soil. Any power needed could run off solar panels in the roof. It would basically be a communal tap and toilet area , with maybe a small office to use as a base for mail, internet and other outside services if possible could also be provided. You could link them together also providing a kind of build city infrastructure that is relocatable and almost entirely above ground.

A new competition Living Box is running until 31.12.2005 is calling for architectural designs for Prefabricated living units and the website also has some great resources of designers who have done some work in this area. I particularly like guerilla homes as it advocates different ways for peoplpe to inhabit space in different environments.

Standard containers come in three sizes:
20′ x 8.5′ with a capacity of 1170 cft
40′ x 8.5′ with a capacity of 2385 cft
40′ x 9.5′ with a capacity of 2690 cft

everything organic

August 2, 2005

Interesting news from Darren about Eero Saarinens TWA JFK terminal being reopened. I passed through it in 1989 on my way to California and I remember it very well, it was at a time when I was first considering studying Architecture at Uni and it showed me the power of an iconic building close up and probably helped me make up my mind. Hopefully it really will get a second life (reopening by jetblue ).
Also interesting piece in IDfuel about the organic architecture of nature. How branching structures maximise their efficiency in material used. Nature can always inspire you.

Scottish Archiecture

July 29, 2005

A rubbish spoiler article in the Scotsman follows the nomination of the scottish parliament in the Stirling prize shortlist. The new Scottish parliament really is a great work of architecture and is not iconic in the authors (Miles Glendinning) sense of the word. Also his example of good town planning, the New Town would not be my first choice even in Edinburgh. Give me the Old town any day of the week over the overblown socially exclusive and reductive grandeur of the New Town. The depressing negativity of the article from someone who should know better contrasts nicely with Enric Miralles’s optimistic pluralistic vision for Scotland!

architecture for sale…..

Buy the best in architetural homes worldwide with architectureforsale and at 13.5 million dollars the Campbell cliffs could be the one, only one little problem (note to self call the bank manager!).

Earthship landing

July 28, 2005

My friend Jurgen is coming to visit us in Finland next month. Great to see you mate! It’s a small detour from the main event where he is going to build an earthship in Sweden. NL branch is here. I really believe the future of architecture will be designing in ecological thinking and technology of different levels into all building types. But having said that look at the treehugger entry for earthship and you will see the problem! The buildings themselves signal to me the kind of eco architecture I’m a little sceptical of, namely that of a building template that ‘looks’ right and is applied in all situations no matter where in the globe and what the site is. Also what about designing in the city environment where more and more of the worlds population will end up living? Anyway the Cult thing mentioned in treehugger is maybe a little overblown but Jurgen try not to listen to too much Grateful Dead and I’ll see you soon!
